Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorders are described by the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as a cluster of brain disorders that cause severe inconsistency in an individual’s mood energy, and ability to function.

Bipolar disorder has three different forms; bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymic disorder.

Bipolar I disorder: is a manic/depressive disorder that can continue with or without psychotic episodes.

Bipolar II disorder: coincides with depression and manic episodes that alternate and are commonly less severe and do not impair functioning.

Cyclothymic disorder: is a disorder that is a periodic disorder that produces shorter episodes of depression and hypomania.

Bipolar and other similar disorders are given their own chapter in the DSM-5, among depressive disorders and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Individuals that require Inspirational Therapies Bipolar Depression Treatment or anywhere in the world will have times when they feel excited, more involved with activities, delusions, and euphoric feelings (manic episodes), and other times when they will feel sad and have hopelessness (depression symptoms). Bipolar refers to moods that shift to severe lows to severe highs. Young individuals that are experiencing major depression symptoms will receive that diagnosis because parents or caregivers are the ones reporting the symptoms they witness, sometimes even going as far as searching for Inspirational Therapies for Bipolar Depression Treatment, and the manic episodes are often not communicated to the professional. It is important that all symptoms are reported to the mental health professional during Bipolar Depression Treatment.

There are symptoms that show less mania, which is called a hypomanic episode, an individual may still experience an inflated mood, higher self-esteem, and not need as much sleep. The manic episodes will impact functioning and the hypomania is not as severe as to affect daily functioning or cause psychotic symptoms but may require Inspirational Therapies for Bipolar Depression Treatment or elsewhere.

A bipolar episode can encompass symptoms of depression and mania, this is called “mixed features.” Individuals encountering an episode with mixed features may notice feelings of worthlessness, guilt, and shame, while feeling keyed up, overactive, and racing and intrusive thoughts. The mood swings will change from moment to moment when experiencing mixed features; one minute there will be feelings of happiness and then expressing suicidal ideation.

Communicating with a mental health professional or your primary care physician, or really anyone who can provide Bipolar Depression Treatment is the first step in identifying bipolar disorder. The physician may want to do a physical exam to rule out any issues that may be the reason for the symptoms. If no other problems exist, the doctor can refer to a mental health professional such as a therapist, or can do a mental health evaluation in his office. The DSM-5 will be used to see if the criteria in the DSM are met to receive Inspirational Bipolar Depression Treatment. To get diagnosed with bipolar the person has to have had at least one episode of mania or hypomania and other criteria.

Mania has to be defined as having a heightened, extensive, or irritable mood that lasts for at least a week and must be present most of the day, nearly every day. Hypomania, the mood must last at least four consecutive days and be present most of the day, almost every day.

There must be at least three or more following symptoms to occur and needs to be characterized to cause a change from customary behavior:

  • Talkative

  • Easily distracted
  • Heightened self-esteem or grandiosity
  • Reduced need to sleep

The depressive symptoms of bipolar disorder are identified by a major depressive episode causing a depressed mood or a loss of interest in the activities once liked or not feeling any pleasure in life.
